VIDYADHAN: Building Partnerships in Corporate Social Responsibility
The case traces the evolution of Vidyadhan, a merit-cum-means scholarship program of the Sarojini Damodaran Foundation (SDF), from a small family-supported initiative in Kerala to a multi-state education support platform. As Vidyadhan scaled its selection processes, student support systems, and administrative operations, it faced uneven outreach in northern states, limited visibility among prospective applicants, and challenges in attracting and retaining sponsors. Donors raised concerns about long-term commitments, the perception that a family foundation should self-fund the program, and competing philanthropic priorities in areas seen as more urgent. Set against India’s CSR landscape and its regulatory pathways for channeling funds to education, the case highlights the complexity of building and managing corporate partnerships while ensuring transparency and standardisation across states. It culminates in Vidyadhan’s central strategic dilemma: how to reduce dependence on the founding family and build a broader, more sustainable sponsor network to support national-level expansion.
