The Substitution Paradox: Protecting the Lead, Losing the Game

  • Author(s):  Hadhin Anjum T, Shovan Chowdhury

This case examines a professional football club in Kerala, India, in the aftermath of a critical match loss that raises questions about in-game decision-making and strategic thinking. Despite leading 2–0, the team conceded three goals in the final ten minutes, resulting in a 3–2 defeat. The turning point is attributed to a tactical substitution by the Coach, who replaced an attacking player with a defender in an attempt to protect the lead. The decision, intended to reduce risk, instead shifted momentum in favor of the opposition.

The case develops through a reflective dialogue between the coach and the team captain, exploring the rationale behind the substitution and its unintended consequences. It introduces the potential role of sports analytics in informing tactical choices, while also highlighting resistance rooted in traditional reliance on intuition and experience. By juxtaposing data- driven approaches with conventional decision-making, the case provides a platform to analyze risk, uncertainty, and strategy in dynamic environments, encouraging learners to evaluate how analytical tools can complement, rather than replace, managerial judgment.
