Beyond CSR – Creating shared value at Mahindra Group
Mahindra Group is one of the largest and most diversified family controlled business group in India, with a rich history that spans over 75 years. The group's businesses span a wide range of sectors, including automotive, farm equipment, automobile components, information technology, finance, aerospace, agribusiness, defence, energy, information technology, hospitality, logistics, real estate, and more. The group's largest company, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., is a leading manufacturer of utility vehicles, tractors, and commercial vehicles in India. Other notable subsidiaries include Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services Ltd., Mahindra Logistics Ltd, Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd., and Tech Mahindra Ltd.
While the group has been involved in formal philanthropic activities since the 1950s, its approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR) changed in late 2000s. Mr.Anand Mahindra, the third-generation family member and leader of the business group, believed in creating shared value by focusing on strategic CSR, which is when the social service activities of the group are aligned with the business strategy. The CSR activities of the group underwent another change after the introduction of the mandatory CSR rule, which required certain Indian companies to spend 2% of their profit on CSR activities.
The Mahindra Group's CSR activities align with its core values of "Rise for Good" by striving to create positive and sustainable change across communities. Mahindra's CSR initiatives concentrate on girls, women, rural India, and farmers, providing help through programs in education, health, and environmental sectors. The flagship CSR programs include Nanhi Kali (focusing on girl child education), Project Hunnar and Mahindra Pride (focusing on skill development), Project Hariyali (focusing on tree plantation), integrated women empowerment programs, and road safety initiatives. Some of the initiatives are inherently linked to some of the business activities of the business group.
While the group has regularly done the impact assessment of its CSR programs, it also needs to ensure that the CSR programs are aligned with the business strategy of the group companies.
