Amazon’s Entry into Quick Commerce

  • Author(s):  Ashutosh Sarkar

The rise of Quick Commerce (QC) has dramatically reshaped the competitive landscape of Indian retail. Fuelled by exceptional growth in Gross Order Value (GOV) and massive venture capital investment, QC platforms promise to deliver essential household products to the customer’s doorstep in under 10 minutes. This highly compressed delivery window presents significant logistical and operational challenges, particularly within India's notoriously complex and often inefficient supply chain infrastructure. However, this rapid expansion has compelled established e-commerce giants, such as Amazon India, to launch their own quick commerce offerings. This case positions the student to critically evaluate the strategic relevance of this nascent sector. It raises the core question of whether the aggressive growth of quick commerce constitutes a fundamental threat or a complementary opportunity to the incumbent e-commerce model. The case delves into the unique value proposition of quick commerce and examines the specific operational innovations and economic trade-offs being employed to make the 10- minute promise viable in the Indian market.
