About the initiative

Strengthening case-based learning through original Indian contexts.

The competition is designed to discover strong case writers and build a long-term pipeline of high-quality teaching cases for management education.

About Gyanodaya

The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) established Gyanodaya – the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation and Publishing – for the development, publication and sale of high-quality, India-focused case studies and other learning materials.

In addition, the Centre provides opportunities for collaboration among faculty members of global and national academic institutions and industry practitioners to strengthen case-based learning and teaching.

About the Competition

The competition aims to promote and encourage the development of high-quality India-focused case studies. It is also expected to strengthen Gyanodaya's long-term publishing ecosystem by identifying promising case writers and creating a pipeline of high-quality teaching cases for publication.

Case Types

Authentic cases. Real organizations. Real decisions.

Gyanodaya accepts only case studies focused on real individuals, organizations and events. Fictional cases are not accepted for this competition or publication.

Primary Case

Cases developed using data gathered through fieldwork, interviews and internal company data. A written consent to publish the case study in Gyanodaya's prescribed format is required from the focal organization.

Library Case

Cases developed from published sources. Necessary and sufficient citations must be provided. Key data, objective claims, statements, actions and sentiments attributed to real individuals or organizations must be properly sourced and accurately documented.

Each prize-winning individual or team will receive a Certificate in addition to the cash award.

First Prize

₹50,000

One winning case study.

Second Prize

₹25,000

Three prizes, each worth ₹25,000.

Third Prize

₹15,000

Six prizes, each worth ₹15,000.

Applicable tax on prize money
1.

Resident Awardees: Tax will be deducted at the applicable rate, including applicable surcharge and cess, as prescribed under the Income-tax Act, 2025.

Non-Resident / Foreign National Awardees: The applicable tax rate will be determined with reference to the provisions of the Income-tax Act, 2025 and the relevant Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) between India and the country of tax residence of the awardee.

The following documents are required to be provided by the awardee for processing the foreign currency remittance through IIM Kozhikode's banker:

a) Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) issued by the competent tax authority of the country in which the awardee is a tax resident, for the relevant tax year; and
b) Form 41 prescribed under the Income-tax Act, 2025, duly filed through the Indian Income Tax e-Filing Portal. The detailed procedure for filling up Form 41 will be communicated to the awardee after the result of the competition is released.
Certificate of Merit: High-quality submissions that receive strong evaluation scores but do not secure a prize will be recognized with a Certificate of Merit.
Eligibility

Open to academics, researchers, students and practitioners.

Who can participate?

The competition is open to a broad community engaged with management and business education.

At least one faculty member must be included as a corresponding author for every submission

Faculty members may submit case studies individually or as part of a team.

Practitioners, industry professionals, research scholars, Ph.D. students, MBA students and other academic staff must include at least one faculty member as a co-author.

All submitted case studies must be original and unpublished.

Cases must not have been previously submitted to, published by, or be under review with another case centre, publisher or similar entity.

Cases currently published by or under review with Gyanodaya are not eligible for the competition.

Submission Guidelines

Prepare your case and teaching note carefully.

All submissions should adhere to the following requirements to be considered for the competition.

Case study + teaching note
Every case study must be accompanied by a Teaching Note (TN). The case study and teaching note must be submitted as separate MS Word documents through the designated platform. Consent forms and other supplementary documents may be submitted where applicable.
Primary-case consent requirement
All primary cases must be submitted with the consent of the focal organization in the prescribed Gyanodaya format.
Document formatting
Use Times New Roman, 12-point font, single line spacing and justified alignment.
Originality and AI-content threshold
Plagiarism and AI-generated content should each remain below the prescribed threshold of 10%.
Recency of the managerial dilemma
Cases should focus on dilemmas that occurred within the last five years for this competition.
Recommended case length
Authors are advised to keep the body of the case between 7 and 8 pages. The total case length, including exhibits, should not exceed 12 pages, excluding references.
References, data and exhibits
All factual data, statements and verbatim material should be appropriately referenced. Sources of exhibits must be clearly cited. References should follow APA style, 7th edition.
Publication Opportunity

Winning submissions can become part of Gyanodaya's published case collection.

All winning case studies, along with their accompanying teaching notes, will be considered for publication in Gyanodaya after the review process, with copyright jointly held by the author(s) and IIM Kozhikode.

Strong submissions that do not secure a prize may also be considered for publication, subject to successful completion of the same three-stage review process.
